Kiru Tea Factory Hosts H2 Pamoja Delegation on Green Hydrogen Tea Drying Pilot

Kiru Tea Factory PLC today hosted a high-level delegation under the H2 Pamoja initiative to explore the establishment of a Green Hydrogen-powered tea drying pilot project aimed at providing a sustainable alternative to fuel wood in tea processing.

The delegation, drawn from Bosch, Hyting, and Maximator, held discussions with the factory board led by Chege Kirundi, alongside Factory Directors and the Factory Unit Manager.

The proposed pilot project is expected to transform tea processing operations by introducing cleaner and more energy-efficient drying technology powered by green hydrogen. The initiative seeks to reduce reliance on fuel wood, a key energy source in tea factories, while advancing environmental conservation and supporting Kenya’s transition to sustainable industrial energy solutions.

Speaking during the visit, leaders at the factory described the engagement as a major step toward modernizing energy use within the tea sector and positioning tea factories at the forefront of climate-friendly manufacturing practices.

Representatives from KTDA Power included Acting General Manager Eng. Moses Sikuku, Mutuga Kigumi, and Winnie Margaret Wanjiru, who reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to driving innovative and sustainable energy solutions across tea factories in Kenya.

The visit marks a significant milestone in ongoing efforts to integrate renewable energy technologies into Kenya’s tea value chain, with stakeholders expressing optimism that the pilot project could pave the way for wider adoption of green hydrogen solutions in the country’s agricultural processing sector.
