Kibra Children Mark Five Years of Kids’ Athletics Day in Nairobi Celebration

Young athletes in Nairobi’s Kibra joined thousands of children around the world in celebrating the fifth anniversary of Kids’ Athletics Day during a colorful Nairobi Region event held at Toy Primary School.

The event, organized under Athletics Kenya, brought together pupils, coaches, teachers and community leaders in a celebration aimed at promoting athletics, fitness and healthy living among children.

Speaking during the event, Barnaba Korir said it was encouraging to see children from Kibra actively participating in the global initiative.

“It feels great to see children in Nairobi’s Kibra join the rest of the world in celebrating five years of Kids’ Athletics Day during the Nairobi Region event at Toy Primary School,” said Korir.

The global campaign seeks to inspire at least 700,000 more young people to embrace athletics and active living in 2026 through fun and inclusive sporting activities.

Korir noted that Kenya’s success in winning last year’s World Athletics Kids’ Athletics Activation award had motivated Athletics Kenya to strengthen investment in grassroots talent development.

“Winning last year’s World Athletics Kids’ Athletics Activation was a big motivation for us to continue investing in children. The future of Kenyan athletics starts at the grassroots and we must keep creating opportunities for every child to run, play and dream,” he added.

The celebration featured track races, relay games, fitness drills and interactive activities designed to nurture teamwork, discipline and confidence among young participants.

Athletics Kenya officials emphasized the importance of developing talent from an early age, saying grassroots programs remain key to sustaining Kenya’s rich athletics legacy on the global stage.

The Nairobi Region event formed part of worldwide celebrations highlighting the growing role of athletics in promoting youth empowerment, health and social inclusion.
