Heavy Rainfall Alert Issued Across Kenya as Met Department Warns of Flood Risk

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rainfall advisory warning that intense rains are expected to affect large parts of the country between May 7 and May 14, 2026.

According to the advisory released Wednesday afternoon by the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, rainfall exceeding 20 millimeters within 24 hours is forecast in several regions, including the Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley, the Central Highlands, and parts of the Southeastern lowlands.

Meteorologists said the rains are expected to intensify from May 8, with the peak likely occurring between May 10 and May 13 before gradually reducing in intensity from May 14.

Areas listed as being at risk include Migori, Nyamira, Bungoma, Busia, Kakamega, Vihiga, West Pokot, Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet, Trans Nzoia, Nandi, Uasin Gishu, Nakuru, Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Kisii, Kericho, Bomet, Kiambu, Embu, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Laikipia, Tharaka-Nithi, Meru, Nairobi and Narok. Parts of Turkana, Samburu, Kajiado and Machakos counties are also expected to receive heavy downpours.

The department cautioned residents to remain vigilant for possible flooding, flash floods and poor visibility, noting that floods may occur even in areas not directly experiencing heavy rainfall due to downstream water flow.

Members of the public have been advised to avoid driving or walking through flooded roads and open fields during storms. The advisory also warned against sheltering under trees or near grilled windows because of the risk of lightning strikes.

People living in landslide-prone areas, especially along the Aberdare ranges, Mt. Kenya region and other hilly zones, were urged to exercise extreme caution.

Government agencies, emergency response teams and county authorities have been placed on alert as officials monitor the evolving weather situation.

The Kenya Meteorological Department said updates will be issued should there be any significant changes in the forecast.
