“Hands That Build the Nation, Hearts That Guard the Future”

By Shokwei Barsulai, Award-Winning Teacher

The hum of early morning activity tells the story of a nation in motion. Before sunrise, hands are already at work—tilling land, opening shops, preparing lessons, saving lives. It is in these quiet, consistent efforts that the true strength of a country is found.

Today, as we mark Labour Day, we pause to celebrate those hands—the builders, the dreamers, the doers—whose dedication keeps the wheels of progress turning. It is a tribute to resilience, to sacrifice, and to the unyielding spirit of workers who show up day after day, no matter the odds.

But beneath the celebration lies a deeper truth: labour is not only about what we produce. It is also about what we protect.

“Pamoja tuwalinde watoto wetu”—together, let us protect our children.

This message echoes with urgency and purpose. Because even as we work tirelessly to build our lives, we must not overlook those who depend on us the most. Our children are watching. They are learning not just from what we say, but from what we do.

In classrooms, playgrounds, and homes, their futures are quietly taking shape.

As a teacher, I have witnessed the powerful difference that care makes. A child who feels safe and supported walks into class ready to learn, to dream, to become. But a child burdened by fear or neglect carries a weight that no young shoulders should bear.

This Labour Day, let us redefine what it means to work hard.

Let it not only be measured in hours spent or wages earned, but in the time we invest in our children, the values we pass on, and the protection we provide. Let us build environments where every child feels seen, heard, and safe.

Communities must rise together. Parents, teachers, leaders, and employers all share a role in shaping a future where children can thrive. Because the strongest nation is not just one with a hardworking population—but one that safeguards its next generation.

So today, as we celebrate labour, let us also renew our commitment.

To work with purpose.
To care with intention.
To protect with unity.

For in the end, the greatest legacy of our labour is not in the structures we leave behind—but in the lives we lift up.

Happy Labour Day.
