Swift Response Averts Rabies Scare in Uasin Gishu County

A suspected rabies incident in Kipkenyo Ward prompted a rapid and coordinated public health response by the County Government of Uasin Gishu County, highlighting the region’s preparedness in handling zoonotic disease threats.

The alert was raised after concerns emerged over a cow carcass believed to be potentially infected with rabies. The Department of Health’s Promotive and Preventive Unit quickly mobilized a multi-sectoral team to contain any possible risk to residents.

Leading the response was County Disease Surveillance Officer Michael Mwasame, who worked closely with veterinary officials to assess and manage the situation. Sub-County Veterinary Officer Rhoda Malakwen coordinated the animal health investigation, ensuring safe handling of the carcass and facilitating laboratory testing at a regional veterinary facility.

Health officials identified 11 individuals who had been exposed to the carcass. These included five primary contacts—three adults and two children—and six secondary contacts. All were immediately advised to begin anti-rabies vaccination as a precautionary measure.

At Pioneer Health Centre, the exposed individuals received timely vaccinations, with costs fully covered under the Social Health Authority (SHA). Authorities noted that the seamless access to care demonstrated the effectiveness of the health coverage system in responding to emergencies.

Concerns also arose after reports that several dogs had consumed meat from the carcass. In response, officials urged residents to vaccinate their pets promptly to prevent any potential transmission. The site where the animal died was disinfected to further reduce risk.

Subsequent laboratory analysis confirmed that the cow tested negative for rabies, easing fears of an outbreak. However, samples have been forwarded to Kabete for additional pathological and serological testing to conclusively rule out any underlying disease.

County officials reaffirmed their commitment to proactive disease surveillance and public safety, urging residents to report unusual animal behavior and to ensure routine vaccination of pets.
