Starlets Shine Bright to Book Dream Final Clash with Australia

Kenya’s Harambee Starlets delivered a superb all-round performance to defeat India 2-0 and secure a place in the final of the FIFA Series 2026 Women’s International Friendlies at Nyayo National Stadium.

The victory marks a significant milestone for the Starlets, underlining their growing stature in international women’s football and setting up a thrilling final showdown against Australia’s Matildas on Wednesday evening.

Goals from Martha Amunyolete and Tereza Engesha sealed the win for Kenya, with head coach Beldine Odemba guiding her side to a memorable home triumph.

Kenya took control early in the match, with Amunyolete opening the scoring after reacting quickly to a rebound from a cross delivered by Fasila Adhiambo. India goalkeeper Shreya Hooda had initially parried the ball, but the Kenyan forward made no mistake from close range.

The early goal set the tone for a dominant first half, as the Starlets dictated the tempo and controlled possession. Their midfield, marshalled by Amunyolete and Mwanahalima Adam, proved too strong for India to break through.

A tense moment midway through the first half saw Ruth Ingosi collide with India captain Pyari Xaxa, forcing both teams into early substitutions. Despite the disruption, Kenya maintained their composure and defensive solidity.

The second half saw the Starlets continue their attacking approach, creating several scoring chances. Their persistence eventually paid off when Engesha doubled the lead with a composed finish, effectively putting the match beyond India’s reach.

Speaking after the match, Odemba praised her team’s execution but noted that they could have been more clinical in front of goal.

“We studied India closely and the players applied the tactics well, but we should have scored more, especially in the first half,” she said, adding that the team relaxed slightly after taking the lead.

Kenya now faces a stern test against Australia, who thrashed Malawi 5-0 in their opening match. Goals from Emily van Egmond, Sam Kerr, Alex Chidiac, Holly McNamara and Leticia McKenna highlighted the Matildas’ firepower.

With the final set for 5:30 pm EAT after the third-place playoff earlier in the day, the Starlets will be aiming to sharpen their finishing and rise to the occasion against a higher-ranked opponent.

A victory would mark a historic achievement for Kenya, as the team continues to inspire a new generation of footballers and elevate the profile of women’s football in the country.
