Opposition Leaders Intensify 2027 Campaign Rhetoric During Kisumu Rally

A high-profile opposition visit to Kisumu turned into a charged political rally, as leaders allied to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) delivered fiery speeches targeting the government while reaffirming their 2027 election ambitions.

The gathering, which drew a large crowd, was headlined by Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, among other leaders. The rally underscored the opposition’s efforts to consolidate support in the lakeside region, widely considered a political stronghold.

Addressing supporters, Babu Owino struck a combative tone, expressing confidence in his political influence and ability to withstand opposition. Referring to Kisumu as his “home,” the legislator thanked residents for their support and pledged to make them proud.

“Kisumu City, my home. Thank you, I owe you, and I will make you proud soon,” he said, in remarks that were met with cheers from the crowd.

Owino also dismissed his critics, referring to them as “goons,” and warned against attempts to challenge his political standing. “I told you, Kenyans, that those goons are useless. I knew I would manage all of them, and that’s exactly what happened. Next time, don’t joke with me if you’re a goon,” he added, further heightening the charged atmosphere at the rally.

On his part, ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna accused the government of using intimidation tactics to suppress opposition activities but praised supporters for turning up in large numbers despite the alleged pressure.

“I am happy that you have shown up despite the intimidation, and we will not relent until we send President William Ruto home,” Sifuna told the crowd.

He reiterated the party’s commitment to contesting the presidency in the next general election, aligning with the position of ODM party leader Raila Odinga.

“We will follow what our party leader Raila Odinga has said. We will field a presidential candidate in the 2027 elections,” Sifuna affirmed.

The ODM Secretary General also took issue with recent actions by Oburu Odinga, terming them “uncalled for” and warning that the party would not allow internal disagreements to derail its broader political agenda.

The rally, which blended political messaging with public mobilization, signals the early stages of what is expected to be an intense campaign season ahead of the 2027 General Election. Analysts say such gatherings are likely to increase as both the opposition and the ruling coalition seek to solidify their bases and expand influence across key regions.

Despite the sharp rhetoric, the leaders urged supporters to remain united and focused, framing their push as part of a broader effort to reshape the country’s political future.
