Concerns Raised Over Alleged Irregular Voter Transfers Ahead of Registration Deadline

As the country marks the final day of the ongoing voter registration and transfer exercise, serious concerns have emerged regarding alleged irregularities that may undermine the integrity of the process.

Reports from Nairobi indicate that a parliamentary aspirant from Garissa is allegedly facilitating the transportation of residents from Mukuru areas to registration centers in Eastleigh. It is further claimed that over 400 individuals were transferred yesterday from Mabatini South B Shopping Centre alone.

These developments raise critical questions about the credibility and intent of such mass transfers. Voter registration, as guided by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), is intended to reflect a voter’s genuine place of residence or an area where they have a legitimate connection. Any coordinated effort to influence or manipulate this process threatens to erode public trust in Kenya’s democratic institutions.

Concerns have also been raised regarding the practicality of such transfers. It remains unclear whether the individuals being moved would realistically travel to Garissa during the 2027 General Election to cast their votes. This casts doubt on the authenticity of the exercise and suggests the possibility of voter manipulation for political gain.

Speaking on the matter, Nairobi South MCA Waithera Chege emphasized the need for vigilance and accountability during this critical period. She called on relevant authorities to ensure that all voter registration and transfer activities adhere strictly to the law and uphold the principles of fairness and transparency.

“We must protect the sanctity of our electoral process. Any attempt to subvert it, no matter how subtle, must be addressed decisively,” she noted.

Stakeholders are now urging the IEBC and other oversight bodies to investigate these claims promptly and take appropriate action where necessary. Upholding the integrity of voter registration is essential to ensuring free, fair, and credible elections in 2027.
