The Raphael Tuju Saga

Raphael Tuju’s disappearance and sudden resurfacing in Karen has quickly become one of the most talked‑about stories in Kenya this week. The former Cabinet Secretary was reported missing after his car was found abandoned, sparking fears of abduction and drawing in the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). His family expressed alarm, saying they could not reach him and even filed a missing persons report.  

The situation took a dramatic turn when DCI boss Amin Mohamed announced that Tuju had never been abducted at all. According to the DCI, he had remained at his Karen residence during the period he was reported missing. This revelation cast doubt on the initial narrative and raised questions about whether the disappearance was staged, misunderstood or part of a larger dispute.  

At the heart of the controversy lies Tuju’s ongoing legal battle over prime Karen properties, a dispute worth billions of shillings. His family’s refusal to allow investigators into the residence during the search only deepened suspicions. Supporters argue that Tuju is being intimidated by powerful interests seeking to force him out of contested property, while critics accuse him of manipulating public sympathy for political or legal leverage.  

The political dimension of the case cannot be ignored. Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen accused Tuju of inciting the public, framing the incident as more than just a personal matter. As a seasoned politician, Tuju’s actions carry weight and his disappearance has reignited debates about state power, property rights and political vendettas in Kenya.  

Public opinion remains sharply divided. Some see Tuju as a victim of harassment, others believe he staged the drama and many are simply unsettled by the conflicting accounts from family and authorities. What is clear is that the saga has exposed deep tensions between political elites, state institutions and the public’s trust in official narratives.
