KURA Launches Landmark BRT Line 5 Project to Revolutionize Nairobi Commuting

The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has taken a major step toward transforming urban transport in Nairobi with the initiation of the contract signing for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Line 5 Project.

The ceremony, led by KURA Director General Eng. Silas Kinoti, officially kicks off the implementation phase of the ambitious project. The new BRT corridor will stretch along Outer Ring Road from Allsops to Taj Mall, promising faster commutes, reduced traffic congestion, and improved connectivity across the Nairobi Metropolitan region.

Eng. Wilfred Oginga, Director of Roads Planning and Design, representatives of the Korean-based contractor YOUNGJIN Joint Venture, and KURA management were present to witness the milestone signing.

Addressing attendees, Eng. Kinoti acknowledged past delays but emphasized renewed commitment to timely delivery. “We are aware that this project has lagged behind the initial timelines. Today’s signing marks a renewed commitment to fast-track its implementation. We will work closely with all stakeholders to ensure the project is delivered efficiently and within the revised timelines for the benefit of the public,” he said.

BRT Line 5 is part of a broader plan to establish five BRT corridors within the Nairobi Metropolitan Area, aiming to modernize public transport while promoting sustainable, reliable, and efficient mobility.

KURA reiterated its mission to develop, manage, and maintain urban road infrastructure that supports economic growth and improves the quality of life for all Kenyans. The Authority continues to collaborate with key partners, including the Kenya Rural Roads Authority, the Kenya Roads Board, and the State Department for Roads, to strengthen the country’s transport network.
