CONNECTED REALITIES: TECHNOLOGY AND THE SOCIETY

By Ruth jebiwot

Technology's rapid march is reshaping societies worldwide. In Kenya, the mobile phone revolution has transformed lives, with mobile money platforms like M-Pesa enabling transactions, payments, and savings for millions. This digital leap has opened doors to financial inclusion, allowing people to access services and opportunities previously out of reach.

The internet is bridging gaps, too. Online platforms are connecting rural communities to markets, information, and services. Farmers can now check prices, order inputs, and sell produce with a few taps, cutting out middlemen and boosting incomes. Education is also getting a boost, with e-learning platforms offering access to quality resources and courses.

But as technology advances, new divides emerge. Not everyone has equal access to these tools – the digital divide is real, with rural areas often left behind. Affordability and digital literacy are hurdles, too. And as more services go online, cybersecurity becomes a pressing concern. Data privacy and online safety are critical issues that need addressing.

Despite these challenges, tech is driving innovation. Startups are solving local problems, from healthcare delivery to logistics. Mobile health apps are helping manage diseases, while fintech solutions are empowering entrepreneurs. The growth of tech hubs and innovation spaces is fostering creativity and entrepreneurship.

The gig economy, powered by digital platforms, offers flexibility but raises questions about job security and workers' rights. As automation and AI reshape industries, there's a growing need for skills development. Embracing lifelong learning and adaptability will be key to thriving in this tech-driven world.

Communities are also using tech to tackle societal issues. Digital platforms are amplifying voices, mobilizing action, and promoting accountability. From climate awareness campaigns to social justice movements, technology is a powerful tool for change.

As society navigates this digital shift, balancing progress with inclusivity is crucial. Bridging gaps in access and ensuring tech serves everyone will shape a more equitable future. The interplay between technology and society is complex, but one thing's clear: the possibilities are vast, and the potential for positive change is huge.
