Babu Owino Welcomes Probe Over Alleged False Publication on X
Babu Owino, the Member of Parliament for Embakasi East Constituency, has reacted defiantly to reports that investigators have obtained a court order to access information linked to his X account over an alleged case of publishing false information.
In a statement shared online, the legislator said he was aware of plans to arrest him and maintained that he was not intimidated by the move.
“I have seen plans to arrest me on course. I highly welcome this nonsense,” Owino said, questioning why officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Western Region were involved in the matter.
Court documents indicate that investigators sought a warrant at the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Kakamega to investigate Owino’s X account @HEBabuOwino following a post allegedly published on February 22, 2026.
The application, filed by the DCI, states that the investigation relates to suspected publication of false information contrary to Section 29 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act.
According to the order issued on March 5, 2026, investigators are seeking subscriber information and technical data linked to the account from X through the Communications Authority of Kenya.
The warrant authorizes Sergeant Aron Koros, an investigator attached to the Regional Criminal Investigation Officer’s office in Western Kenya, to obtain details including the account’s registered name, associated mobile numbers, device information, IP addresses, and other electronic records relevant to the investigation.
The complaint that prompted the probe was reportedly filed by Raymond Omolo.
Authorities argue that the information will help establish the origin of the post and determine whether any criminal offence was committed.
However, Owino criticized the investigation, suggesting that it was politically motivated. The outspoken MP has often used social media platforms to comment on national issues and criticize government actions.
The lawmaker insisted that he would not be intimidated and said he was ready to face investigators if necessary.
The development is expected to spark debate over the use of cybercrime laws and freedom of expression online in Kenya, particularly involving statements made by political leaders on social media.
Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
