Arati Calls for Humane Policing as Kisii Mourns Six Killed in Kegati Crash
Kisii Governor Simba Arati has called on police officers to serve with humility and compassion, urging a shift toward community-centered policing following a tragic road accident that claimed six lives in Kegati.
Speaking during a mass burial ceremony at Kegati Comprehensive School grounds in Bobaracho Ward, the governor emphasized the importance of empathy in law enforcement, saying it is key to building trust and cooperation between officers and the public.
“We need our police officers to work closely with wananchi, with humility and understanding, so that we can strengthen security and community relations,” Arati said.
The governor took the opportunity to commend Derrick Odhiambo, a police officer who was among the first responders at the scene of the accident. Arati praised Odhiambo for his dedication and swift action in assisting victims, noting that his efforts had earned widespread recognition from local residents.
“His commitment went beyond the call of duty. This is the kind of service we want to see from all officers,” the governor added.
The six victims lost their lives two weeks ago after a trailer reportedly lost its brakes and rammed into them while they were at a boda boda stage at Kegati Trading Centre. The incident sent shockwaves across the community, highlighting concerns over road safety and enforcement.
Leaders present at the burial echoed the governor’s sentiments, calling for stricter traffic regulations and improved response mechanisms to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
As families laid their loved ones to rest, the somber ceremony served as a reminder of the devastating consequences of road accidents, with renewed calls for accountability, safer roads, and stronger collaboration between law enforcement and the public.
