Tophill Hospital Urges School Leaders to Prioritize Mental Health

School principals in Kericho have been urged to place greater emphasis on mental health and wellness within their institutions following rising cases of stress-related challenges among professionals.

The call was made during the Kericho Sub-County meeting of the Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (KESSHA) held at Eka Hotel Kericho, where Tophill Hospital addressed school leaders on the growing mental health burden in the education sector.

Speaking at the forum, Tophill Hospital Operations Manager Erick Ngeno noted that mental health concerns are increasingly affecting professionals across corporate and public sectors, with educators facing unique pressures.

“School leaders carry significant responsibility in shaping academic excellence and student welfare. However, the growing pressure of performance targets, administrative demands, and evolving education policies is placing educators at risk of burnout, stress-related illnesses, and other mental health challenges,” he said.

Ngeno emphasized that teachers and school administrators are not immune to workplace stress, warning that untreated mental health issues could negatively impact both staff performance and student outcomes.

The hospital highlighted the urgent need for early detection of mental health conditions, preventive strategies, and the establishment of institutional wellness programs within schools. Education stakeholders were encouraged to create supportive environments that promote psychological well-being alongside academic achievement.

As part of its outreach initiatives, Tophill Hospital reaffirmed its commitment to supporting schools and corporate institutions through mental health awareness forums, preventive health screenings, professional counseling services, and corporate wellness partnerships.

The appeal comes amid increasing recognition of mental health as a critical component of overall productivity and sustainable development in Kenya’s education sector.
