STUDENTS SHOULD CONTROL THEIR OWN HELB MONEY.
By Abigael Ngina
The financial support provided by Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) plays an important role in helping many Kenyan students complete their higher education. This money is meant to support students with tuition, accommodation, food, and other academic needs. Because the funds are specifically intended for students, the control of HELB money should be left to them rather than involving parents in managing it.
University and college students face daily expenses that only they fully understand. They know how much they need for rent, food, transport, books, and other necessities. When parents control HELB money, they may not always recognize how urgent some of these needs are. This can create unnecessary difficulties for students who may end up lacking essential resources despite having financial aid available.
Allowing students to manage their own HELB money also encourages responsibility and independence. Higher education is not only about academic learning but also about preparing young people for adulthood. Handling finances helps students learn how to budget, plan their spending, and make responsible decisions. If parents take full control of the money, students miss the opportunity to develop these important life skills.
Another reason students should control HELB money is that not every family situation is the same. In some cases, parents may use the funds to solve other family problems instead of supporting the student’s education. Although family challenges are real, HELB funds are meant specifically to help the student succeed in school. Giving parents control can sometimes prevent the money from serving its true purpose.
This does not mean that parents should be completely left out. Parents can still guide and advise their children on how to manage the money wisely. Their experience can help students avoid unnecessary spending. However, advice should not turn into control. The final decision on how HELB money is used should remain with the student.
In conclusion, HELB money should be controlled by students because it supports their daily academic needs, encourages financial responsibility, and ensures the funds are used for their intended purpose. Parents can offer guidance, but students should ultimately be trusted to manage the support meant for their education.
