Six Arrested in Crackdown on Criminal Gangs Along Kenya’s Coast

Security agencies have arrested six suspects in an intensified multi-county operation targeting violent criminal gangs operating in Kenya’s Coast region.

The coordinated crackdown, conducted across Mombasa, Kilifi and Kwale, follows weeks of heightened insecurity blamed on organized groups commonly referred to as “panga boys,” known for carrying out violent attacks and intimidation in residential areas.

Acting on actionable intelligence, detectives mounted targeted raids on individuals identified as key operatives within the criminal networks. Those arrested have been identified as Nicholas Mumba Chisiwa, Haniff Iqbal Sharbaz, Salim Mafuko Hamis, Ali Musa Mwachimwandi, Sadik Hamis Mwanzembe and Samuel Gitonga.

During the operation, officers recovered assorted crude weapons and narcotic substances believed to have been used in the commission of crimes. Authorities said the items seized corroborate earlier intelligence linking the suspects to violent activities as well as drug-related operations.

Investigators say the combination of weapons and narcotics underscores the dual threat posed by the gangs, which have been accused of fueling fear in communities while engaging in illicit drug trade.

All six suspects are currently in custody undergoing processing as detectives expand investigations into multiple related incidents still under active review. Security officials indicated that further arrests are likely as efforts continue to dismantle the criminal networks and apprehend remaining members and facilitators.

Police have assured residents that security operations remain ongoing and vigilance has been heightened to restore and sustain safety across the Coast region.
