RVTTI Hosts Landmark RPL Training to Bridge Skills and Certification Gap

Rift Valley Technical Training Institute (RVTTI) has successfully hosted a comprehensive Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) training, reinforcing its role as a leading institution in skills development and competency-based education. The multi-day training brought together professionals, trainers, assessors, and industry stakeholders with the shared goal of strengthening skills assessment, recognition, and certification processes.

The RPL training focused on equipping participants with practical knowledge and hands-on experience in identifying, assessing, and validating skills gained through informal and non-formal learning. Through expert facilitation, interactive sessions, and practical demonstrations, participants were empowered to translate real-world experience into recognized qualifications—effectively bridging the long-standing gap between skills acquisition and formal certification.

Speaking during the event, RVTTI Principal Ms. Loice Kutoh highlighted the importance of RPL as a transformative tool for inclusive education and workforce development. She noted that many skilled individuals possess valuable competencies acquired through years of experience but remain disadvantaged due to the lack of formal credentials. Mrs. Kutoh emphasized that the training aligns with national and global skills development frameworks and positions RVTTI as a champion of accessible, industry-responsive training.

“This program is about unlocking potential and ensuring that no skill goes unrecognized,” she said. “By strengthening RPL implementation, we are creating pathways for skilled professionals to advance their careers, improve employability, and contribute more effectively to economic growth.”

The training also underscored RVTTI’s commitment to competency-based education and training (CBET), with participants gaining deeper insights into assessment standards, documentation, quality assurance, and ethical practices in skills recognition.

The initiative received strong endorsement from Prof. David Some , Chairman of the Board of Management for RVTTI, who applauded the institute for rolling out programs that respond directly to the needs of the labor market. He praised the leadership and organizers for prioritizing initiatives that recognize talent, promote equity, and support national development goals.

“Recognition of Prior Learning is a powerful driver of social and economic transformation,” Prof. David noted. “By formalizing skills, we empower individuals, strengthen industries, and build a more competitive workforce. RVTTI continues to set the pace in delivering impactful and forward-looking training programs.”

Participants expressed appreciation for the practical approach adopted during the training, noting that the knowledge gained would significantly enhance their capacity to assess and certify skills within their respective institutions and industries.

The successful hosting of the RPL training further cements RVTTI’s position as a center of excellence in technical and vocational education and training, and a key partner in advancing skills recognition, lifelong learning, and sustainable development.
