Murkomen Reaffirms Kenya’s Commitment to Protecting Citizens’ Liberties

The government has reaffirmed its commitment to upholding citizens’ rights and freedoms as guaranteed under the law.

Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen made the remarks during a meeting with the European Union Special Representative for Human Rights, Kajsa Ollongren, where the two leaders discussed strengthening cooperation on human rights and democratic governance.

Murkomen said Kenya remains committed to protecting the rights of every citizen and advancing a robust democratic culture supported by an independent judiciary, strong oversight institutions and a vibrant civil society.

The meeting also focused on enhancing strategic collaboration in key areas, including security and the ongoing modernization of the National Police Service (NPS). The CS highlighted reforms within the security sector and lauded the European Union for supporting capacity building initiatives and the digitization of the criminal justice system.

His remarks came a day after Kenya and UNITA signed a training Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Geneva, Switzerland, aimed at strengthening institutional capacity.

Ollongren congratulated Kenya on its recent election to the United Nations Human Rights Council, saying the position would bolster the country’s influence in promoting regional security and stability.

She was accompanied by EU Ambassador to Kenya Henriette Geiger and other officials.

Also present at the meeting were Principal Administrative Secretaries Beverly Opwora (National Administration) and Jacob Narengo (Internal Security), Secretary for National Administration Thomas Saka, Independent Policing Oversight Authority Commissioner Dr Annette Mbogoh, and representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the NPS.
