Kenya Positions Itself as a Premier Sports Tourism Hub Ahead of HSBC SVNS Nairobi
The Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, Hon. Rebecca Miano, EGH, has reaffirmed Kenya’s growing status as a premier global Sports Tourism destination ahead of the highly anticipated HSBC SVNS Nairobi tournament set to take place at Nyayo National Stadium this weekend.
Speaking during a partnership dinner held last evening and attended by Principal Secretary for Tourism Hon. John Ololtuaa, Principal Secretary for Youth Affairs and Sports, officials from the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU), and the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB), CS Miano highlighted the strategic importance of hosting world-class sporting events in driving tourism growth and economic development.
“As we welcome the world to Nairobi for the HSBC SVNS Series, we are doing more than hosting a rugby tournament. We are showcasing Kenya as the Home of Champions — a destination where sport, culture, hospitality, and investment opportunities converge,” said CS Miano.
The HSBC SVNS Series is expected to attract international teams, fans, media, and investors, providing Kenya with a global platform to market its diverse tourism products, including wildlife safaris, coastal experiences, cultural heritage, and conference tourism.
CS Miano emphasized that Sports Tourism remains a key pillar in the Ministry’s strategy to diversify tourism offerings and increase visitor numbers. Through collaboration with the Kenya Rugby Union, the government is leveraging the global appeal of the Sevens circuit to position Kenya as a vibrant and competitive sporting destination.
Principal Secretary John Ololtuaa noted that international sporting events significantly enhance destination visibility. “The global broadcast reach of the SVNS Series allows us to tell Kenya’s story to millions worldwide, strengthening our brand as Magical Kenya,” he said.
The government has called on Kenyans to turn out in large numbers to support the national teams — Shujaa and the Lionesses — as they represent the country on home soil.
“To all visiting teams and fans from across the globe, we say Karibuni Kenya — the Origin of Wonder,” CS Miano added.
The HSBC SVNS Nairobi tournament is expected to boost local businesses, hospitality establishments, and transport services, further underscoring the economic value of Sports Tourism in Kenya.
