Eldoret-Based Human Rights Activist Calls for Unity, Dialogue, and Institutional Respect Within ODM

An Eldoret-based human rights activist Kipkorir Ngetich has called for unity, structured dialogue, and respect for party institutions within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) as the party navigates a critical period in its history following the passing of the late Hon. Raila Odinga.

Speaking during a civic engagement forum in Eldoret, the activist emphasized that ODM remains one of Kenya’s most influential and historically significant political parties, and its future direction must be guided by discipline, constitutionalism, and collective responsibility.

He noted that Raila Odinga’s political journey was marked by resilience, negotiation, and a consistent belief in dialogue as a tool for national cohesion. According to Ngetich, any ongoing or future engagements between ODM and President William Ruto’s administration should be viewed within the broader context of national stability and inclusive governance.

“Hon. Raila Odinga believed in structured political engagement. His approach often prioritized national interest, even when political differences existed,” the activist stated. “As a party, ODM must reflect on that legacy and ensure that its decisions strengthen both its internal unity and its contribution to national development.”

Support for Experienced Leadership

Ngetich urged ODM supporters across Nyanza, Kisii, Nairobi, Western Kenya, the Coast region, and other parts of the country to remain calm and united as the party consolidates its leadership structures. He expressed confidence in senior party figures, including Dr. Oburu Odinga, describing them as leaders with institutional memory and experience necessary to guide the party during transition.

He stressed that leadership succession within any democratic party should be handled through established constitutional mechanisms and not through public disagreements that may create confusion among supporters.

“ODM has a constitution, internal organs, and well-defined processes. These structures exist to ensure continuity and stability. They must be respected,” he said.

Call for Internal Dialogue

The activist acknowledged that differences of opinion are natural in any vibrant political party. However, he urged party leaders and members to manage disagreements through dialogue and internal forums rather than public confrontations.

He emphasized that public disputes risk weakening party cohesion and distracting from the broader objectives of serving supporters and advancing national interests.

“In a democracy, debate is healthy. But debate must be guided by respect and a shared commitment to the party’s long-term vision,” he observed.

The activist also encouraged party officials to communicate clearly and transparently with members to reduce speculation and misinformation that could heighten tensions.

Role of Youth and Emerging Leaders

Addressing young leaders within ODM, the activist called for mentorship, consultation, and patience. He noted that the party has historically nurtured leaders through structured engagement and encouraged intergenerational cooperation.

“Young leaders are the future of ODM and the nation. Their energy and innovation are valuable, but they must work within the frameworks that sustain the party,” he said.

He further encouraged youth leaders to seek guidance from senior members and community elders to strengthen unity and avoid polarization.

Engagement in National Governance

On the broader political landscape Ngetich stated that ODM’s participation in any national political arrangement should be informed by strategy, policy priorities, and the welfare of its supporters. He argued that engagement with the ruling administration does not necessarily diminish a party’s identity but can provide an opportunity to influence governance outcomes.

“No country is led by perfect individuals. Governance is about negotiation, compromise, and practical solutions. What matters is whether such engagements deliver tangible benefits to citizens,” he said.

He added that ODM’s historical role in advocating for constitutional reforms, devolution, and democratic rights places it in a strong position to shape national discourse constructively.

Preserving Raila Odinga’s Legacy

The activist concluded by urging party members to honor Raila Odinga’s legacy by safeguarding unity and institutional integrity. He described the late leader as a symbol of perseverance and political maturity whose vision extended beyond personal ambition.

“Raila Odinga invested decades in building a movement rooted in reform and national inclusivity. The greatest tribute members can give him is to protect that movement from fragmentation,” he said.

He expressed optimism that through structured dialogue, respect for party processes, and collective leadership, ODM would remain a central force in Kenya’s political future.

“As a nation, we must learn that strong institutions are more important than individual differences. ODM has the capacity to emerge stronger if its members choose unity over division and dialogue over confrontation,” he concluded.
