Senator Essy Okenyuri Nyaituga Foundation Champions Reading Culture and Supports Needy Student in South Mugirango

The Essy Okenyuri Nyaituga Foundation today visited Riagumo Mixed Secondary School in Moticho Ward, South Mugirango Constituency, to implement the Mchakato wa Usomi Programme, a volunteer-driven initiative aimed at promoting a strong reading culture among learners.

Mchakato wa Usomi seeks to increase students’ access to books while nurturing a lifelong love for reading. The programme is designed to enhance learners’ focus, broaden their perspectives beyond their immediate environment, and stimulate critical thinking, creativity, and academic excellence.

Speaking during the visit, the Foundation emphasized that consistent reading plays a central role in shaping informed, innovative, and responsible future leaders by improving concentration and opening minds to wider opportunities.

During the engagement, the Foundation identified a bright but needy Form Four student, Benjamin Mariota Obondi, and fully cleared his school fees for the entire academic year. The intervention is intended to ensure that the student remains in school without financial distractions and is motivated to concentrate fully on his studies and academic improvement.

The Foundation noted that the support goes beyond financial assistance, describing it as a commitment to ensuring that talent and ambition are not curtailed by poverty or challenging circumstances.

Senator Essy Okenyuri Nyaituga, a Specially Elected Senator, reaffirmed her commitment to uplifting needy students and supporting schools, particularly in rural and remote areas where learners are often disadvantaged due to high poverty levels.

“Our core objective is to level the playing field so that students from less privileged backgrounds can compete fairly and thrive academically,” the Foundation said.

Through initiatives such as Mchakato wa Usomi, the Foundation continues to invest in education as a key pillar for social transformation and sustainable development.
