Murkomen Reviews Coast Guard Operations Along Lake Victoria Corridor
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening security and safeguarding livelihoods around Lake Victoria, citing the lake’s immense economic and strategic importance to the country.
Speaking after a high-level meeting with the management of the Kenya Coast Guard Service (KCGS), led by Director General Bruno Shioso, CS Murkomen said the government is keen on enhancing the Service’s capacity to effectively secure the Lake Victoria corridor. The meeting focused on reviewing KCGS work plans and assessing the delivery of its mandate, particularly in combating smuggling of goods, including narcotics, and ensuring safety on the lake.
Murkomen noted that a strong Coast Guard presence is critical in protecting fishing communities and other lake-dependent livelihoods while curbing illegal activities that undermine the economy and national security. He emphasized that the Ministry of Interior continues to prioritize maritime and inland water security as part of its broader security strategy.
As part of the visit, the CS inspected ongoing rehabilitation works at the Old Port Coast Guard station in Kisumu. The project, which is currently 80 per cent complete, is expected to significantly enhance surveillance and rapid response capabilities on the lake, while also improving working and living conditions for Coast Guard officers.
To further boost patrol operations, Murkomen said Kenya Shipyard Limited has rehabilitated three additional patrol boats, which will be deployed to strengthen coverage and response along Lake Victoria. He added that the government will continue to support KCGS through the acquisition of land for permanent facilities and the recruitment of additional personnel to meet growing operational demands.
The Cabinet Secretary also underscored the importance of close collaboration with other stakeholders, including Beach Management Units, to promote compliance with regulations, enhance information sharing, and improve safety for lake users.
The meeting and inspection were attended by Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o, Deputy Inspector General of the Administration Police Service Gilbert Masengeli, and other senior government officials. Murkomen said such multi-agency and intergovernmental cooperation is vital in ensuring effective security and sustainable development along the Lake Victoria corridor.
