Marakwet West MP Pays Tribute to Veteran Community Leader Mzee Joseph Kihara

Marakwet West Member of Parliament Timothy Kipchumba Toroitich has led tributes following the passing of respected community elder Mzee Joseph Kihara of Kimnai Sub-location, who died last week.

In a moving tribute, the MP described Mzee Kihara as one of the most distinguished and celebrated figures in the Marakwet community, whose life was marked by wisdom, vision and an unwavering commitment to development, particularly in the education sector.

“Mzee Joseph Kihara was a towering figure from Kipsaiya, a reservoir of wisdom and knowledge, and a man who spoke with clarity of purpose,” Toroitich said. “He was a pioneer of development who relentlessly championed the importance of education as a foundation for progress.”

The MP noted that Mzee Kihara inspired many across generations, not only through his leadership but also through his warm personality and sharp sense of humour. He recalled that the elder was known for his eloquence and distinctive command of the English language, often delivered with a charming British accent that left a lasting impression on all who interacted with him.

Toroitich said he personally sought counsel from Mzee Kihara on numerous occasions, describing him as a man far ahead of his time whose guidance was invaluable.

“Whenever I needed counsel, I would always pay him a visit. His insight and perspective were exceptional,” the MP said.

He added that even in death, Mzee Kihara’s legacy remains firmly rooted in the hearts and minds of the Marakwet people, noting that his contribution to community development and mentorship has left an indelible mark that will endure for years to come.

“Mzee shall dearly be missed. He has left a giant footprint that cannot be erased,” Toroitich said.

The MP conveyed his condolences to the family, relatives and friends of the late Mzee Kihara, praying that his soul rests in eternal peace as the community mourns the loss of a revered elder and visionary leader.
