Kenya, US Reaffirm Strong Security Partnership as Officers Who Served in Haiti Honoured
Kenya and the United States continue to enjoy deep diplomatic and economic ties anchored on shared democratic values and strong security cooperation, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has said.
Speaking on Thursday at the National Police College, Embakasi ‘A’ Campus in Nairobi, CS Murkomen lauded the United States Government for its immense support towards the success of the Kenyan-led Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti.
The Cabinet Secretary joined US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau during a ceremony organised by the US government to honour Kenyan police officers who served in the Haiti Mission.
“We are grateful for the unwavering support of the United States towards this historic mission. Today, we celebrate brave and patriotic Kenyans who put their lives on the line to restore humanity, peace and stability in Haiti,” Murkomen said.
He noted that the heroic service of the officers exemplifies the professionalism, discipline and global standing of the National Police Service, as well as Kenya’s firm commitment to regional and international peace and security.
CS Murkomen highlighted the Mission’s notable achievements, including the restoration of order in parts of Port-au-Prince, securing critical infrastructure, reopening major roads and enabling humanitarian agencies to access affected communities.
He added that as Kenya continues to play a key role in the newly established Gang Suppression Force, strong partnerships remain critical to the Mission’s long-term success.
“We commend the United States not only for supporting the Mission, but also for its continued collaboration with Kenya in training and equipping our police service,” he said.
The ceremony was attended by the ChargĂ© d’Affaires of the United States Embassy in Nairobi, Ms. Susan M. Burns, National Security Advisor Monica Juma, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, Deputy Inspector General (APS) Gilbert Masengeli, Deputy Inspector General (KPS) Eliud Lagat, and other senior officials from the Kenyan and US governments.
The event underscored the enduring partnership between Kenya and the United States in advancing global peace, security and stability.
