International Zebra Day: Celebrating Kenya’s Striped Treasures

Today, Kenya marks International Zebra Day, celebrating these iconic animals that play a vital role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano, EGH, highlighted Kenya’s unique position as home to two zebra species — the widespread Plains zebra and the rare, endangered Grévy’s zebra, whose survival largely depends on conservation efforts in northern Kenya.

Zebras are central to Kenya’s wildlife heritage, from the spectacular Great Migration in the Maasai Mara to the critical conservation work at Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and Samburu. While plains zebras are numerous, Grévy’s zebra populations are limited to just a few thousand, making protection efforts crucial.

CS Miano encouraged communities, visitors, and stakeholders to continue supporting conservation initiatives, ensuring that these majestic animals remain a symbol of Kenya’s rich natural heritage and a key attraction for sustainable tourism.
