Gikomba Traders Welcome Near Completion of Quarry Road Market Block D
Gikomba Market Chairman Mr. Samson Wanjohi has welcomed the near completion of the Gikomba Quarry Road Market Block D, describing it as a transformative milestone for traders and a strong boost to urban livelihoods.
Aligned with the objectives of Kenya Vision 2030 to promote inclusive growth and improve urban livelihoods, the seven-storey market represents a major investment in people-centred development. Beyond improving safety and organisation, the project has generated hundreds of employment opportunities during construction and is expected to drive sustained commercial activity once it becomes fully operational.
For decades, traders at Gikomba Market have endured repeated losses caused by frequent fire outbreaks, which disrupted businesses and eroded household incomes. The Quarry Road Market Block D is designed to address these long-standing challenges by providing secure, well-structured trading spaces for over 1,700 traders, fostering business continuity and long-term resilience.
The modern facility features a basement parking area, day-care services, youth-focused spaces, cold-room storage, a designated hardware section, and a redesigned internal layout that prioritises safety, cleanliness, and efficient movement of people and goods.
Mr. Wanjohi noted that the project restores dignity to traders and creates an enabling environment for small and micro-enterprises to thrive.
The development forms part of Nairobi City County’s broader market modernisation agenda, alongside similar projects across the city, aimed at revitalising local economies, strengthening MSMEs, and advancing the Social and Economic pillars of Kenya Vision 2030.
