Gachagua Alleges Police Brutality During Kirinyaga Political Mobilisation

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has alleged that security forces used excessive force against his supporters during a political mobilisation tour in Kirinyaga County, claiming police deployed live ammunition, teargas, and state-backed militia to disrupt the event.

In a statement issued after the incident, Gachagua said the group endured what he described as “violent brutality of the state,” including vandalism of equipment, but still managed to reach Kagio town, which he termed “the very heart of Kirinyaga County.”

“Despite the heavy attack by police, live ammunition, teargas, vandalism of our equipment and state-sponsored militia, we reached Kagio,” Gachagua said, praising residents of the county for their resilience and unity.

The former deputy president framed the events as part of a broader political struggle ahead of the August 10, 2027, general election, saying the people of Kirinyaga were “united as one in the pursuit of change.”

He concluded his remarks by blessing the residents and the nation, stating, “God bless you, and God bless Kenya.”

Authorities had not immediately responded to the allegations at the time of publication, and it remained unclear whether any injuries or arrests were reported during the confrontation.
