DCI Issues Update on Investigation Into Death of Hon. Cyrus Jirongo

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has released an update on its ongoing inquiry into the fatal road traffic accident that claimed the life of the late former Cabinet minister and businessman, Hon. Cyrus Jirongo.

In a statement issued as a follow-up to its January 5, 2026 briefing, the DCI confirmed that investigations into the accident—which occurred on the night of December 13, 2025, at the Karai area along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway—are nearing completion. Once finalized, the inquiry file will be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for appropriate action.

According to the DCI, the investigation has been “wide-ranging and comprehensive,” addressing concerns raised both publicly and through official investigative channels. Detectives have analyzed information from multiple sources and recorded statements from individuals deemed relevant to the case.

So far, statements have been recorded from 28 people, including seven passengers who were traveling in the bus involved in the accident and who voluntarily presented themselves to assist investigators.

Among those who have recorded statements is National Assembly Speaker Rt. Hon. Moses Wetang’ula, who cooperated with investigators during the early stages of the probe. Also interviewed were Ms. Eunice Chelagat, wife of Hon. George Khaniri, and Hon. Khaniri himself, described as a close friend of the late Jirongo. The couple visited the accident scene on the day of the incident and helped facilitate the transfer of Jirongo’s remains from Naivasha Sub-County Hospital Mortuary to Lee Funeral Home.

The DCI further disclosed the findings of the postmortem examination conducted on the deceased. The autopsy revealed that Hon. Jirongo sustained severe crush injuries, including a broken sternum and lacerations to the heart, liver, and kidneys. The pathologist concluded that the cause of death was multiple crush injuries resulting from blunt force trauma.

In its statement, the DCI urged media houses, political leaders, and members of the public to exercise restraint and avoid making unverified claims that could prejudice the investigation, cause public anxiety, or unfairly damage the reputations of individuals who have cooperated with authorities.

“The DCI remains committed to conducting impartial, thorough, and expeditious investigations in strict accordance with the law,” the statement read.

Hon. Cyrus Jirongo was a prominent political and business figure whose death sparked widespread public interest and speculation, prompting calls for a transparent and conclusive investigation.
