NLC, CLAN Seal Landmark Pact to Advance Community Land Rights
The National Land Commission (NLC) has taken a decisive step toward strengthening community land rights with the signing of a groundbreaking Memorandum of Understanding with Community Land Action Now (CLAN), marking a new era of collaboration in land governance.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, NLC Chief Executive Officer CHRP Kabale Tache Arero said the partnership underscores the Commission’s commitment to delivering practical, people-centred solutions for communities across the country. The agreement was signed in the presence of Commissioners Hon. Tiyah Galgalo and Hon. Esther Murugi, alongside the NLC secretariat, with CLAN represented by its President, Dr. Abubakar Ketemon Lewano.
Under the partnership, NLC and CLAN will jointly implement initiatives aimed at empowering community landholders and improving land governance at the grassroots. Key among these is the establishment of a comprehensive land rights monitoring framework to enhance transparency and accountability, as well as the promotion of peaceful coexistence through strengthened Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) and Traditional Dispute Resolution (TDR) mechanisms.
“This is not a symbolic agreement, but a hands-on alliance focused on delivering tangible outcomes for communities,” Arero said, noting that the collaboration will help accelerate the registration of community lands while safeguarding rights and promoting harmony.
The Commission reaffirmed its resolve to work with partners such as CLAN to champion exemplary land governance, foster peace, and unlock the social and economic potential embedded in community land ownership.
