Kapsisiywo Community Cross Country Promotes Grassroots Talent Development
By Wasike Elvis
The Kapsisiywo Community Cross Country was successfully held today, bringing together athletes from diverse age groups and competitive levels in a strong demonstration of inclusivity and community-driven sport development.
Participants ranged from as young as five years old to athletes over sixty, with competitors racing in clearly defined age categories. The event recorded an impressive turnout, particularly among children, highlighting the growing interest in athletics at the grassroots level and the importance of community-based competitions in nurturing young talent.
Speaking after the event, National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K) Deputy President Barnaba Korir lauded the initiative, noting that such races play a critical role in early talent identification and athlete development.
“Community cross country events like this provide an important entry point into athletics. Introducing children to structured competition at an early age helps instill discipline, confidence, and healthy lifestyles, while also laying the foundation for future elite athletes,” Korir said.
He added that these platforms allow coaches and administrators to identify raw talent early and guide it through the right development pathways. According to Korir, grassroots competitions remain essential in building a sustainable pipeline for Kenyan athletics.
In line with this objective, Athletics Kenya continues to strengthen its Kids’ Athletics programmes, with a focus on age-appropriate competition, structured training, and long-term athlete welfare. Support for community initiatives such as the Kapsisiywo Cross Country aligns with national efforts to ensure continuity and excellence in the sport.
The event concluded successfully with participants, parents, and local organizers applauding the inclusive nature of the competition and its positive impact on the community.
From first-time runners taking part for fun to experienced athletes competing seriously, the Kapsisiywo Community Cross Country reaffirmed the role of grassroots sport in shaping the future of Kenyan athletics.
