Governor Natembeya Congratulates Elizabeth Cassidy Maina, African Youth Chess Champion

Governor George Natembeya has lauded Elizabeth Cassidy Maina, a Grade 9 student from Kitale Progressive School, for her outstanding achievement at the 2025 African Youth Chess Championship held in Harare, Zimbabwe, from 6th to 15th December.

Elizabeth emerged as the winner of the Under-14 Girls category, scoring an impressive 8 out of 9 points, a feat that has brought pride to both Trans-Nzoia County and the nation.

“I was delighted to host Elizabeth in my office today. Her dedication, skill, and discipline are an inspiration to young people across our county,” said Governor Natembeya. “Congratulations, Elizabeth! You have made Trans-Nzoia and Kenya very proud.”

The governor emphasized the importance of supporting young talent in sports and intellectual pursuits, noting that achievements like Elizabeth’s highlight the potential of the county’s youth to excel on continental and global stages.

Elizabeth’s success comes at a time when chess is gaining popularity in Kenya, with more young players participating in regional and international tournaments. Governor Natembeya pledged continued support for programs that nurture talent and create opportunities for the county’s youth to shine.
