Governor George Natembeya Urges Youths to Embrace Discipline and Avoid Drug Abuse in Trans Nzoia

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has urged the youth in the region to embrace discipline, positive change, and strong moral values, as well as avoid the dangers of drug and substance abuse. His call came during a sensitization campaign organized by the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drugs Abuse (NACADA) in Kaplamai, Cherang'any Sub-County, which was attended by local leaders, youth, and community members.

In a message delivered on his behalf by Jane Wachwenge, the County's Chief Officer for Gender, Youth, Sports, Culture, and Tourism, Governor Natembeya stressed the severe personal and societal consequences of drug and substance abuse. He reminded the youth that drug use can not only destroy their potential but also harm the community and society at large. He encouraged them to choose a path of discipline and focus on building positive habits that would help them grow into responsible and successful individuals.

The event, which was part of an ongoing youth drug awareness drive, focused primarily on students preparing to return to school after the long holiday break. The aim was to ensure that the young people are well-informed about the dangers of alcohol, drugs, and other harmful substances as they transition back into their academic lives.

During the event, Jane Wachwenge urged the youth to stay away from alcohol and drugs, emphasizing that their main priority should be their studies and personal growth. “It is important to focus on your education, build your career, and develop your talents,” she said. “The future is in your hands, and you must work hard to achieve your goals.”

She also reassured the youth that the Trans Nzoia County Government is committed to supporting their development. The Governor’s office, she said, will continue investing in various youth empowerment programs, such as the annual Governor's Tournament, sports development programs, and talent nurturing forums. These initiatives aim to provide transformative exposure to social and economic opportunities, helping young people unlock their potential and build meaningful futures.

Phanice Khatundi, the County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries Development, was also in attendance at the event. She echoed the concerns about the devastating effects of drug abuse on the youth, noting that it had contributed to a growing lack of productivity in various sectors. Khatundi called on the youth to concentrate on self-discipline, hard work, and perseverance in order to reach their full potential and contribute positively to the county and nation. She emphasized that success comes through dedication and resilience, not through harmful habits that lead to personal and collective destruction.

Representing NACADA, Mr. Mutuko also spoke at the event, reinforcing the authority's commitment to combating drug abuse among the youth. He explained that NACADA is dedicated to providing public education on the dangers of substance abuse and is working closely with county governments to reach as many young people as possible. “We want to engage with youths directly through public awareness campaigns and educational programs,” Mr. Mutuko said. “Our goal is to ensure that every young person is aware of the dangers of drug abuse and has the tools and knowledge to make informed, healthy decisions.”

NACADA’s involvement in the campaign is part of a broader national initiative to safeguard the younger generation against the growing threat of substance abuse. Mr. Mutuko highlighted the importance of collaboration between national and county governments in creating sustainable solutions to the issue. He also noted that the partnership would eventually contribute to social-economic development by improving the overall wellbeing of the youth and empowering them to become productive members of society.

The youth drug awareness drive was met with a positive response, as many students and young people in the community expressed their gratitude for the informative session. Several youth leaders also stepped forward to pledge their commitment to remaining drug-free and encouraging their peers to follow suit. Through collective effort and commitment, the leaders believe that Trans Nzoia can overcome the challenge of drug abuse and nurture a generation of young people who are ready to take on leadership roles and contribute to the development of their county and country.

The campaign is a part of ongoing efforts to address the drug abuse crisis that has been affecting the youth across the country. As more and more young people fall victim to substance use, the need for preventive measures has become more urgent. Both local and national leaders are intensifying their efforts to reach out to as many young people as possible, offering them guidance and support in making healthier choices for their future.

The event in Kaplamai was an important step in raising awareness about the dangers of drug abuse, and the organizers are optimistic that similar campaigns will continue to have a positive impact on the youth of Trans Nzoia and beyond. With strong partnerships, dedicated programs, and continued engagement with young people, the fight against drug abuse is gaining momentum, and there is hope that future generations will be free from the grips of addiction.

The Road Ahead

As the youth of Trans Nzoia prepare for the new school year, they are now equipped with the knowledge and tools to make responsible decisions regarding their health and well-being. The county government, along with NACADA and other stakeholders, will continue to work together to provide opportunities for youth development, including educational programs, mentorship, and recreational activities that help steer young people away from harmful substances.

Ultimately, the message is clear: the youth must embrace discipline, remain focused on their education, and stay away from the temptations of drug abuse. By doing so, they will be able to secure a brighter and more prosperous future for themselves and for their community.
