Energy CS Opiyo Wandayi Launches Sh2.1 Billion Electrification Project in Homa Bay
Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has launched a Sh2.1 billion national government-funded electrification project aimed at expanding access to electricity to approximately 20,000 households across Homa Bay County.
The project, being implemented under the Rural Electrification Programme, marks the first time such a significant allocation has been made by the national government to improve power connectivity in the county. CS Wandayi said the funding was approved through the National Assembly under the leadership of President William Ruto.
“Let me remind you that for the first time in history, the national government has allocated Sh2.1 billion to connect electricity in Homa Bay,” Wandayi said. “This is money that has never been seen in this area before, yet the people of this county have continued to pay taxes like all other Kenyans.”
Speaking during the project launch at Wahambla Village in Homa Bay Town Constituency, the Cabinet Secretary said the initiative seeks to address long-standing development disparities by connecting communities that have remained off-grid for decades. He described the electrification drive as a historic milestone in correcting regional development imbalances.
Wandayi emphasized that electricity access goes beyond household lighting, noting its role in driving economic growth and social transformation.
“Electricity is not just about lighting homes. It is about creating opportunities, supporting small businesses, improving security, and uplifting the standard of living for our people,” he said.
Under the project, Homa Bay Sub-County has been allocated Sh150 million to connect about 2,000 households to the national grid. The wider county rollout will see thousands of families, schools, health facilities, and trading centers benefit from reliable and affordable power.
During the visit, the Cabinet Secretary also inspected the ongoing implementation of the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC) Last Mile Connectivity Project, urging contractors to ensure timely delivery and high-quality work.
Local leaders and residents welcomed the initiative, saying improved electricity access will stimulate economic activity, enhance service delivery, and open up new opportunities for youth and small-scale entrepreneurs.
The Homa Bay electrification project forms part of the government’s broader agenda to achieve universal electricity access and promote inclusive development across the country.
