Marakwet West MP Timothy Kipchumba Toroitich Condemns Nandi Senator Cherargei Over “Disturbing” Remarks on Abductions in Uganda and Tanzania

Marakwet West Member of Parliament Timothy Kipchumba Toroitich has strongly criticized Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei over his recent remarks on the alleged abductions and torture of Kenyans by what he termed as the “despotic regimes” of Presidents Yoweri Museveni of Uganda and Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania.

In a strongly worded statement, Toroitich described the senator’s comments as “archaic, deeply disturbing, and unsettling,” saying they risk embarrassing the country at the regional level.

“The sentiments by my friend, Senator Cherargei, on the recent abductions and subsequent torture of Kenyans by the despotic regimes of Museveni and Suluhu are not only archaic but deeply disturbing and unsettling,” Toroitich said. “Such statements border on national embarrassment and do not reflect the values of diplomacy, humanity, and patriotism that Kenya stands for.”

The legislator urged Senator Cherargei to withdraw his remarks and issue a public apology to Kenyans, arguing that leaders should be measured and responsible in their public pronouncements, especially on sensitive cross-border matters.

“As leaders, we must remain sober and respectful when addressing issues that touch on the sovereignty of our neighbours and the safety of our citizens,” Toroitich added. “The Nandi Senator has a moral and patriotic obligation to withdraw his sentiments and apologize to Kenyans.”

Toroitich emphasized the importance of diplomatic engagement and regional cooperation in addressing incidents involving Kenyan citizens in neighboring countries. He warned that reckless political statements could strain relations between Kenya and its East African Community (EAC) partners.

“We must protect Kenya’s image in the community of nations. Diplomacy, not antagonism, is the path to justice and stability,” the Marakwet West MP stated.

The remarks come amid growing regional concern over reports of enforced disappearances and mistreatment of citizens across East Africa. Kenyan leaders and human rights groups have been calling for stronger government action and accountability from neighboring states accused of violating the rights of Kenyans.
