LSK President Faith Odhiambo Participates in East Africa Climate Justice Roundtable
The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President, Faith Odhiambo, joined Bar Leaders from across the East African region for a high-level Roundtable on Climate Justice, co-convened by the Pan African Lawyers Union (PALU) and Oxfam Africa on the sidelines of the 2025 East Africa Law Society (EALS) Conference in Addis Ababa.
The roundtable provided a strategic platform to strengthen East Africa’s engagement with the ongoing process before the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights regarding states’ climate change obligations. This engagement follows PALU’s landmark request for an advisory opinion filed on 2 May 2025, seeking clarity on African states’ human rights duties in addressing the escalating climate crisis.
President Odhiambo emphasized that climate change remains one of the greatest threats to life, dignity, and development across the continent, calling for stronger regional collaboration to safeguard communities and ecosystems.
“The climate challenges facing East Africa demand coordinated action—robust regulation of corporate actors, strategic climate litigation, and clear regional guidelines to secure our environment and the future of our people,” she noted.
LSK reaffirms its commitment to advancing climate justice, supporting regional legal cooperation, and championing frameworks that protect human rights in the context of environmental degradation.
