Kisii Woman Rep Dorice Aburi Pushes for Tougher Laws on Sexual Offenders

Kisii Woman Representative Dorice Aburi has renewed calls for stricter punishment for sexual offenders, particularly men responsible for impregnating underage girls and individuals found guilty of defilement.

Addressing journalists during a meeting with teen mothers at the Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Recovery Centre in Kisii town, Aburi revealed that she has already tabled a Bill in Parliament seeking tougher amendments to the Sexual Offences Act (2006). The Bill has passed its first reading and proposes enhanced legal measures and public sensitization to curb rising cases of gender-based violence.

Aburi expressed concern that many victims of sexual assault lack information on the proper collection and preservation of evidence — a gap she said often undermines successful prosecution of perpetrators. She emphasized the need for widespread education to empower victims and strengthen justice processes.

The Woman Representative also encouraged teen mothers to enroll in the Social Health Authority (SHA) program to access free prenatal and postnatal care services. Additionally, she pledged support for young people who dropped out of school due to pregnancy or other challenges, promising to sponsor those willing to resume their education.

Aburi reiterated her commitment to championing the rights and welfare of vulnerable groups, stressing that stronger laws and community awareness are essential in combating sexual violence.
