Governor Wisley Rotich Leads County in Final Farewell for Chesongoch Landslide Victims

Preparations are underway in Chesongoch for the final farewell of 31 victims of the recent landslide, with Governor Wisley Rotich calling on residents to stand together in solidarity as the community mourns.

According to Governor Rotich, the bodies will be moved this afternoon from the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) mortuary and Tot Mortuary to Chesongoch, where a night vigil will be held. The governor noted that the vigil will allow families and residents to honor the departed and support one another during the difficult period.

A Funeral Mass is scheduled for tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. at St. Mauras Grounds in Chesongoch, to be presided over by Eldoret Catholic Diocese Bishop Dominic Kimengich. After the service, all 31 victims will be laid to rest in Chesongoch.

Governor Rotich emphasized the county government’s continued support to the affected families, noting that coordination of burial logistics and welfare assistance remains ongoing. He urged residents and leaders to join the sendoff ceremonies, describing the moment as one that calls for unity and compassion.

“Welcome as we work together to give our people a befitting sendoff. Mutyo,” Governor Rotich said in his message of condolence and solidarity.

The landslide, which struck the area recently, has left the county grieving as leaders renew calls for enhanced disaster preparedness and long-term mitigation measures to protect vulnerable communities.

The mass burial is expected to draw hundreds of mourners from across Elgeyo Marakwet and neighboring regions.
