Police Nab Suspect with 40 Litres of Illicit Brew ‘Unga’re’ in Tharaka Nithi

One suspect has been arrested in Karamani, Tharaka Nithi County, in connection with the possession and distribution of an illicit alcoholic brew known locally as ‘Unga’re’, following a joint crackdown led by officers from Rubati Police Post and local National Government Administration Officers (NGAOs).

During the targeted operation in Karamani Location, officers seized 40 litres of the illegal brew, which was found in the suspect’s possession. The suspect was immediately taken into custody and is currently being held at the local police station, awaiting arraignment in court.

According to authorities, the operation is part of an ongoing national campaign to combat the production, sale, and consumption of illicit alcohol, which continues to pose serious health and safety risks in many communities.

“The suspect will face charges related to the possession and distribution of illicit liquor,” a police statement read. “The seized brew has been secured at the station and will be presented in court as an exhibit.”

The National Police Service has reiterated its warning to the public against the consumption of unregulated brews, citing health hazards including poisoning, blindness, and even death.

“We strongly discourage the consumption of illicit brews like Unga’re,” the statement added. “These substances are not only illegal but are often produced in unsanitary conditions using harmful ingredients.”

Police and administrative officers have vowed to intensify crackdowns in hotspot areas across the county, calling on local residents to cooperate by reporting illicit brewing and distribution activities.

The crackdown comes amid heightened government efforts to eliminate the menace of illegal alcohol, which has been linked to rising cases of addiction, domestic violence, and economic hardship in affected communities.
