Prof. Catherine Gachutha Champions Mental Health Awareness
By John Kariuki
Prof. Catherine Gachutha, the Chairperson of the Kenya Counseling and Psychologists Association (KCPA), delivered a powerful message underscoring the urgent need for Kenya to prioritize mental health and counseling services. She stressed that mental wellness is as critical as physical health and called on organizations, schools, and communities to integrate counseling and psychosocial support into their systems.
Flagging off the event, former Kanduyi MP Hon. Wafula Wamunyinyi emphasized the need for leaders to prioritize mental health as a foundation for development. “We cannot talk about building a strong economy while our people are silently battling depression, trauma, and anxiety,” he said. “Mental health is the bedrock of productivity, and investing in it means investing in the future of this nation.”
Prof. Gachutha further emphasized that counseling should no longer be viewed as a last resort but as a proactive tool for growth, resilience, and productivity. She highlighted that many Kenyans continue to struggle silently with depression, anxiety, and trauma, yet cultural stigma and lack of awareness prevent them from seeking help. According to her, counseling and therapy can significantly reduce mental health challenges and contribute to a healthier, more productive society.
She urged leaders in both public and private sectors to invest in mental health programs, adding that strong institutions must not only provide services but also take care of the people behind them. Her advocacy struck a chord with the audience, many of whom praised her call to action and reaffirmed their commitment to support mental health initiatives.
