Murkomen Backs E-Procurement System Amid Challenges

Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has voiced strong support for the government's shift to an electronic procurement system, despite ongoing challenges in its implementation.

Speaking on Friday, CS Murkomen said the adoption of the E-Procurement platform—being spearheaded by the National Treasury—is a critical step toward enhancing transparency, accountability, and efficiency in public procurement.

"It will ensure the most qualified persons deliver services to Kenyans," said Murkomen. "When you are introducing a new system, you will definitely have challenges. It can't be theoretical—it has to be practical."

The CS emphasized that while issues are expected during the rollout of such systems, they should not be a deterrent to progress. "We are tendering for consumables and operations. We totally support the E-Procurement. Yes, there are challenges, and we will continue to have them, but you must adopt the system and then work on the challenges."

Murkomen also shared his personal experience with the new system, citing a recent instance where he approved a procurement plan electronically.

"I was very happy the other day to approve the procurement plan electronically," he said. "The procurement is ongoing, and yes, we are having challenges—but those challenges will ensure the process is transparent."

His comments come amid growing debate within government circles and among suppliers regarding the readiness of the public sector to fully transition to the digital procurement system.

The National Treasury has set firm timelines for all ministries, departments, and agencies to migrate to the platform, as part of broader reforms aimed at curbing corruption and improving service delivery.

Despite resistance in some quarters, Murkomen's endorsement signals continued political backing for the initiative from the highest levels of government.
