KANU Secretary General George Wainaina Cleared in Advocate Mbobu Murder Probe
KANU Secretary General Hon. George Wainaina has been cleared of any involvement in the tragic murder of prominent city lawyer, Advocate Kyallo Mbobu, after being briefly detained for questioning last Thursday.
Wainaina was arrested following the emergence of CCTV footage showing him greeting the late Advocate Mbobu in the parking lot of Sagret Hotel, moments before the lawyer was killed. In a press statement released on Sunday, Wainaina confirmed that his interaction with the deceased was a "brief exchange of greetings" and that Mbobu had been meeting with Wainaina's neighbor at the time.
"In the wake of his shocking murder, I understood the heightened scrutiny that follows every lead as the authorities work tirelessly to bring the perpetrators to justice," Wainaina stated. He added that, as a licensed firearm holder, he surrendered his weapon for ballistic analysis and fully cooperated with investigators.
Authorities, after what has been described as "thorough preliminary investigations," reportedly found no evidence linking Wainaina to the crime, leading to his release. No charges have been preferred against him.
The incident has sparked widespread public interest, given the high profile of both individuals involved. Advocate Mbobu was well known in legal circles for his vocal defense of civil liberties and had been involved in several high-profile cases.
Wainaina, in his statement, expressed deep sympathy for the victim’s family and acknowledged the emotional toll of the experience. "While I went through a difficult and distressing experience, I remain fully aware that my ordeal cannot be compared to the immense pain being borne by the family, friends, and colleagues of the late Advocate Mbobu," he said.
He also used the occasion to call for justice, fairness, and improved national security, noting that “every Kenyan deserves justice, fairness, and security, for these are the foundations of a free and stable society.”
The KANU official thanked party members and supporters who stood by him during what he termed a "trying time," singling out the party chairman for his support.
As investigations into Advocate Mbobu’s murder continue, Wainaina has pledged continued cooperation with law enforcement agencies and reaffirmed his commitment to the rule of law.
Police have yet to issue an update on the ongoing investigation or identify any suspects in the fatal shooting. Advocate Mbobu’s family, meanwhile, has called for a speedy and transparent process to bring the perpetrators to justice.
