Jepchirchir Sprints to Gold in Tokyo Marathon as Kenya Shines Again on Global Stage
Kenya's long-distance running legacy soared to new heights on Sunday morning after Olympic champion Peres Jepchirchir claimed a dramatic gold medal in the women’s marathon at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
In a race that kept fans on edge until the final metres, Jepchirchir displayed tactical brilliance and unmatched grit to outkick Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa in a nail-biting sprint finish, stopping the clock at 2:24:43.
The thrilling victory was met with jubilation back home, where senior government officials, including Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration Kipchumba Murkomen, joined millions of Kenyans in celebrating the historic achievement.
“Peres Jepchirchir’s win is not just a medal—it is a symbol of Kenya’s indomitable spirit,” CS Murkomen said in a statement. “She demonstrated courage, discipline, and pride under immense pressure, and once again reminded the world of Kenya’s place in elite distance running.”
Jepchirchir’s triumph marks her second global marathon title, having also won gold at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, and cements her position as one of the most decorated marathoners of her generation. Her ability to remain composed during the intense final kilometres, before launching a decisive sprint, showcased her experience and mental toughness.
Murkomen also praised Athletics Kenya, the coaching staff, and the broader Team Kenya contingent for their role in supporting the athlete to victory.
“This is not just Peres’ moment—it is Kenya’s moment,” he added. “To Team Kenya: your brilliance continues to unite and inspire our nation. Keep flying our flag high.”
The gold adds to Kenya’s growing medal tally in Tokyo and reinforces the country’s reputation as a global powerhouse in athletics, particularly in the marathon and distance events.
Jepchirchir’s victory was witnessed by thousands lining the streets of Tokyo, and millions more around the world watching the televised spectacle. Her composure, endurance, and blistering finish are already being hailed as one of the championship’s defining moments.
