Celebrations as 159 Children Graduate HIV-Free in Elgeyo Marakwet
Elgeyo Marakwet County today celebrated a major milestone in the fight against HIV/AIDS after 159 children were officially declared free of the virus under the Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) program.
The joyous event brought together parents, health workers, county officials, and development partners to mark the successful journey of children born to HIV-positive mothers but who tested negative after going through the PMTCT program.
In a speech read on his behalf by County Secretary Paul Chemuttut, Governor Alex Tolgos commended the parents and healthcare providers for their resilience and commitment, noting that the achievement was a testament to the county’s progress in combating HIV.
“HIV and AIDS remain among the leading causes of death in the country and continue to put pressure on household budgets. Today’s milestone proves that with dedication, we can save more lives and secure a brighter future for our children,” said the governor.
Ampath Plus Deputy Chief of Party, Dr. Jeremiah Laktabai, lauded Elgeyo Marakwet for recording tremendous progress in reducing mother-to-child HIV transmission. “We shall continue to partner with the County to ensure the set targets are achieved,” he assured.
National AIDS Control Council (NACC) board member Lucy Kathi emphasized the importance of empowering people living with HIV with life skills to help them live productive lives.
The event also saw the launch of the County AIDS Implementation Plan (CAIP) for the next five years, which outlines strategies to strengthen prevention, care, and support systems.
County Acting CEC for Health Abraham Barsosio led the celebrations, which were also graced by Chief Officers Mary Kipchumba and Josphat Maiyo, alongside representatives from NACC, Ampath Plus, and other development partners.
