Tragedy Strikes Daraja Mbili as Fatal Road Accident Claims Lives in Kisii Town

 

 Several people are feared dead and dozens more injured following a horrific road accident at the bustling Daraja Mbili market in Kisii Town earlier today. The crash involved a truck carrying cooking oil and a Toyota Probox, causing widespread destruction and panic in the area.

According to eyewitnesses, the truck, which was descending from Kisii town, lost control near the CBK Bank junction. Unable to brake, it veered into the crowded market area, ramming into several boda boda operators, vehicles, and roadside vendors—many of whom were women selling produce such as tomatoes.

“I saw the truck speeding downhill. It was hooting nonstop, and then it just plowed into everything—motorbikes, cars, and even the market stalls. People were screaming and running for their lives,” said one visibly shaken witness.

The force of the impact caused severe damage to property and left a trail of mangled vehicles and debris scattered across the road. The Toyota Probox involved in the crash was reportedly crushed under the weight of the truck.

Emergency response teams, including police, medics, and fire services, arrived at the scene shortly after the accident. Several of the injured were rushed to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital for treatment, with many reported to be in critical condition.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the official death toll as rescue operations continue. The area around the accident scene has been cordoned off as investigators begin their probe into the cause of the crash.

Kisii County police commander, who addressed the media at the scene, urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly when navigating steep descents. “We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident. Our officers are on the ground managing the situation and will release more details as they become available.”

The accident has sparked renewed concerns over road safety and enforcement of traffic regulations, particularly in high-traffic areas like Daraja Mbili.
