Spike in Road Accidents Prompts Urgent Response from National Police Service

A surge in road accidents across the country in recent days has triggered concern and prompted swift action from the National Police Service (NPS), which has issued a public statement urging increased vigilance and responsibility among all road users.

In its statement, the NPS extended heartfelt condolences to families mourning loved ones lost in the recent incidents and wished a speedy recovery to all those currently receiving treatment in various hospitals.

“Road crashes cause immense suffering to affected families, and every possible measure must be taken to prevent further loss of life,” read part of the statement.

While investigations into the specific causes of the latest accidents are ongoing, authorities have reiterated that many road accidents are preventable if road users adhere to safety guidelines. The NPS cited reckless driving behaviours — including speeding, drunk driving, dangerous overtaking, overloading, driver fatigue, and careless pedestrian crossing — as major contributors to road carnage.

“The value of life is immeasurable,” the statement continued. “Every road user must take personal responsibility and remain conscious of their actions while on the road.”

Passengers and members of the public have been urged to report cases of reckless driving and other safety violations using the NPS toll-free hotlines (999, 911, 112), the anonymous reporting number #FichuaKwaDCI (0800 722 203), or via WhatsApp at 0709 570 000.

In an effort to curb the trend and restore safety, the NPS has rolled out a series of collaborative interventions with other key agencies. These include:

  • Strict enforcement of speed limits across major highways.
  • Crackdowns on overloading of goods and passengers.
  • On-the-spot vehicle inspections to verify compliance with NTSA licensing.
  • Removal of unroadworthy vehicles from circulation.
  • Comprehensive reviews of PSV Saccos to ensure adherence to safety regulations.

The NPS emphasized that road safety is a shared responsibility, and called on all citizens to actively participate in creating safer travel conditions.

“As a nation, we must work together to make our roads safer and prevent the unnecessary loss of lives. Road safety is a shared responsibility,” the statement concluded.

As the nation grapples with this alarming trend, the police urge road users to exercise extra caution, especially during peak travel hours and holiday seasons when accident rates typically spike.
