Lifting Women, Lifting Communities: Busia's Empowerment Drive
Hundreds of women from across Nambale Constituency gathered at Emukhuyu Primary School to participate in the Wezesha Mama, Inua Jamii initiative — a powerful socio-economic empowerment program spearheaded by Busia County Woman Representative, Hon. Catherine Omanyo.
The event, part of the county's ongoing efforts to uplift women and grassroots communities, served as a platform to address the most pressing challenges faced by women while equipping them with tools and resources to drive economic independence.
Speaking during the event, Hon. Omanyo emphasized the importance of women's empowerment in achieving the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), a cornerstone of Kenya’s national development plan.
"When you empower a woman, you empower an entire community. This program is not just about handouts — it's about sustainability, dignity, and transforming livelihoods," she said.
To that end, the Woman Rep issued various empowerment items, including sewing machines, water tanks, and cheques to local Self-Help Groups. These resources are aimed at enabling women to start or expand income-generating activities such as tailoring, water vending, and small-scale enterprises.
Beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the support, noting that the equipment and funding would significantly ease the economic burden on families and improve standards of living. Many Self-Help Group leaders highlighted how previous support from the Woman Rep’s office had already yielded tangible results, including improved access to clean water and increased household incomes.
The Wezesha Mama, Inua Jamii initiative is part of a broader sensitization and empowerment campaign being rolled out across Busia County, focusing on gender equality, entrepreneurship, and community development.
Hon. Omanyo reaffirmed her commitment to championing the rights and welfare of women, especially those in rural areas who often face limited access to economic opportunities.
As the initiative continues to gain momentum, it stands as a beacon of hope for many women striving to build better futures for themselves and their communities — one step at a time.
