Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU) Secretary General, Dr Charles Mukhwaya, has lauded the government’s efforts to make university education more accessible to students across the country.

Dr Mukhwaya hailed the move as a positive step towards easing the financial burden on parents and expanding opportunities for learners aspiring to pursue higher education. He noted that the gesture would encourage more students to enroll in universities, aligning with the national vision of empowering youth through education.

“This gesture will enable more students to access university education and parents to send their children to university,” he stated.

While welcoming the government’s decision, Dr Mukhwaya urged increased capitation to universities and timely disbursement of funds to sustain the quality of education and institutional operations. He emphasized that adequate financing is critical to maintaining academic standards, improving infrastructure, and enhancing research output within the country’s higher learning institutions.

The KUSU boss reaffirmed the union’s support for reforms aimed at making education affordable and inclusive but insisted that funding remains key to the success of such initiatives.

The government’s university access programme is expected to benefit thousands of students, reflecting a renewed commitment to equitable education and the development of a knowledge-driven workforce.
