James Gakuya Leads Nairobi Governor Race in New Vision Polls

Embakasi North MP James Gakuya has emerged as the frontrunner in the Nairobi governor race, according to the latest Vision Polls survey. If elections were held today, Gakuya would secure 40.6 percent of the vote, well ahead of Embakasi East MP Babu Owino at 29.9 percent.

The poll attributes Gakuya’s popularity to his close association with low-income city residents and his vocal opposition to what he terms harassment of hawkers by Governor Johnson Sakaja’s administration. As chair of the Nairobi County Trade Committee, Gakuya has been recognized for advocating Mwananchi-friendly policies and overseeing timely development initiatives, including issuance of bursaries and road improvements in Embakasi North.

Babu Owino’s support, while significant, stems largely from his outspoken nature on issues affecting Nairobi residents, including his response to the Embakasi fire tragedy and his pushback against policies he believes have negatively impacted the city. He has also built a strong reputation for awarding education bursaries to needy students.

Businesswoman Agnes Kagure polled 15 percent, with her campaign focusing on empowering youth and women, supporting vulnerable families, and assisting needy children in Nairobi’s slums.

Governor Johnson Sakaja, who is facing growing criticism, received only 11.7 percent support in the survey. Respondents cited hawker evictions, high levels of corruption, discrimination, absenteeism, and arrogance as key reasons for their dissatisfaction with his administration.

Notably, 6 percent of respondents said they were still undecided, indicating that the Nairobi governor race remains competitive despite Gakuya’s strong showing.

The poll suggests that Nairobi voters are leaning toward leaders perceived to be in touch with grassroots issues, particularly economic empowerment and social support
