Over 400 Homes Connected to Power as Mwea MP Commissions Key Projects

More than 400 households in Kangai Ward, Mwea Constituency, have been connected to the national electricity grid following the official commissioning of the Karikoini A & B Electricity Project on Thursday.

The event was led by Mwea MP Mary Maingi, who was joined by Principal Secretary for Energy Alex Kamau Wachira, Principal Secretary for Diaspora Affairs Rosaline Njogu, and Beatrice Njuguna, the General Manager at the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC).

Speaking at the event, MP Maingi described the project as a “transformative step” toward achieving full electricity coverage in the constituency.

"This milestone marks real progress for our people. With over 400 homes now connected to power, we’re empowering families, businesses, and schools," Maingi said. "We remain committed to achieving 100% electricity connectivity in Mwea."

According to Maingi, 30 other REREC electricity projects are currently underway across Mwea, aimed at expanding access and improving the quality of life for residents in rural and underserved areas.

Later in the day, the MP also commissioned the grading and murraming of several key access roads in Mutithi and Thiba Wards. In Mutithi Ward, the upgraded roads include Wanguku, Waititu, and Muraya, while in Thiba Ward, works are ongoing on the Nguka Primary – Karira – Haraka Road.

“These road projects are essential for improving mobility, facilitating trade, and enhancing access to services for our residents,” Maingi noted.

Residents welcomed the developments, saying the electricity and road upgrades would significantly improve their livelihoods and access to opportunities.
