Gladys Boss Flags Off Kaptagat Cycle Challenge, Backs Forest Conservation Efforts

Uasin Gishu Woman Representative Hon. Gladys Boss on Monday flagged off the annual Kaptagat Cycle Challenge, an event aimed at promoting environmental awareness and celebrating local conservation efforts.

Held in the scenic highlands of Kaptagat, the event brought together cyclists, community members, and leaders from across the region to rally behind the ongoing Kaptagat Forest Conservation and Restoration Program.

Speaking during the flag-off ceremony, Hon. Boss praised the program for its impact on both environmental preservation and community development.

“This initiative is a clear example of how local action can drive national transformation. Through this program, we are not only restoring the forest ecosystem but also empowering families to transition into sustainable livelihoods,” said Hon. Boss.

She was joined by Keiyo South Member of Parliament, Dr. Kimaiyo, and the program’s leadership team, including Chairman Hon. Lagat. The forest restoration initiative, now gaining national recognition, was launched during the tenure of Dr. Chris Kiptoo as Principal Secretary for Environment. Dr. Kiptoo’s vision helped launch alternative economic opportunities for families previously reliant on forest grazing, such as beekeeping, agroforestry, and eco-tourism.

Hon. Boss also expressed gratitude to Cabinet Secretary Deborah Barasa for her full support and vision in scaling up environmental restoration efforts in the region.

The Kaptagat Cycle Challenge, now an annual event, is designed to increase awareness on climate change, promote healthy lifestyles, and unite communities in the shared goal of conserving Kenya’s forests. The Kaptagat Forest, part of the larger Elgeyo Hills ecosystem, plays a critical role in carbon sequestration and water catchment for the surrounding counties.

“This forest is not just a natural resource—it is our legacy. We must all work together to ensure its protection and sustainable use,” added Hon. Boss.
